How to Specify a Wedge Wire Screen
To specify a wedge wire screen, define its geometry, clear slot opening, material grade, flow direction, support and connection details, operating conditions and acceptance criteria. For an OEM or replacement enquiry, include the drawing revision, quantity and delivery destination.
1. Begin with the separation duty
Describe what the screen must retain or pass, the process medium and how the equipment operates. Include flow with units, temperature and any relevant solids, abrasion or cleaning conditions. A request for a “fine screen” leaves too much open: the intended separation and operating limits are more useful.
2. Define the geometry and interfaces
Choose the screen form and distinguish overall dimensions from active screening dimensions. On panels, show the frame and usable area. On cylinders, show diameter, active length and end fittings. On curved screens, identify radius and arc. For a basket or false bottom, include taper, segment joints, supports and access openings.
Mark the datum used for each critical dimension. Include mating holes, flange faces, sealing areas and assembly clearances. The connection to the equipment often decides whether a replacement fits.
3. Specify slot, profile and flow together
State the clear slot opening in millimetres and identify the working face and flow direction. Include the tolerance required for acceptance. If a wire profile or support arrangement is mandatory, put it on the drawing; otherwise ask for it to be reviewed against the duty.
Slot opening is not the same as wire pitch, a universal particle cut size or flow capacity. Read the slot and open-area explanation before comparing screen quotations solely by slot size.
4. Identify material and documentation requirements
State the specified alloy rather than only “stainless steel.” Include exposure, cleaning chemicals and temperature where they influence selection. If material records, a particular surface condition or a project standard are required, name the document and scope in the enquiry.
Do not assume that a generic material name also confirms a finished component’s load rating, hygienic acceptance or environmental compliance. Those requirements belong in the order specification.
5. Make the acceptance criteria quotable

6. Request a clear quotation
Ask the quotation to identify the proposed screen construction, material, tolerances, inspection scope, quantity, packing, lead time and delivery terms. Resolve differences between the enquiry and the proposal before placing the order.
